#2 Lost Child

When I was almost two years old, one month shy of it, my parents drove into the big city, Winnipeg, to do some shopping. My mother has told me that they were in a bad part of the city and yet, they still chose to do what they did. In the time we live in, I don’t believe anyone would take such a chance. Perhaps living in a more trusting time in history gave my parents the courage to leave me. And yet, when this event took place, they learned a very good life lesson. Their naiveté was quickly replaced with understanding and they passed that knowledge on to their children. And, thankfully, I was not lost to them forever.

There is no proof whether there was angel involvement during this incident. Perhaps God simply directed a person in that direction to help that day. Either way, I am glad I am alive and well, able to share this story with all of you.

Although my mother repeated this event to us children numerous times, I am so grateful that she took the time to write it down in my baby book. I will transcribe the story in my mother’s very own words. I added paragraphs, a few notes for clarity and proper punctuation to make it more readable. Note: My mother refers to herself as ‘Mommy, Mom, or I’. She refers to my dad as ‘Dad’.

My Mother’s Written Document:

In 1965, February, Mommy and Daddy went to Winnipeg to buy a tape player. Colleen had fallen asleep on the back seat. We thought we would let her sleep. The rest of us went in the store. It took a while to buy the tape player. But when we walked back to the car, the back door was open and Colleen was gone. Dad was all beside himself. He took Lucille (Colleen’s older sister) by the hand and ran down the side walk.

I went back in the store and phoned the police. Then I went back out and walked back to the corner. I couldn’t see Dad and Lucille, so I thought I would walk down the street the other way. But then a car stopped and asked if we were looking for a little girl with a blue coat.

I said, “Yes.”

The lady said, “We brought her to the police station.”

I walked back in the store with Andy (Colleen’s younger brother), and soon they phoned from the police station, asking what Colleen was wearing.

I said, “A blue coat and brown boots.”

They said, “She is here.”

What a relief. Mom’s knees were very weak. Soon Dad came and we went to the police station. Dad drove through two red lights. We got there. Dad went in to get Colleen. She had to go to the bathroom. She was wiggling very much. That’s why she got out of the car.

We were very thankful we had our little girl back.

Never leave your child in a vehicle by him or herself.

My mother didn’t mention God’s protection or the possibility of angels being involved. But I am convinced that God had his hand on that situation and, either, sent angels to guide the outcome or sent that woman and, whomever was with her, to help keep me safe. My mother often mentioned that they were in a bad part of the city, known for crime. That’s what shook my parents up so badly, combined with the fact that I had simply vanished from that parking lot.

I will be forever grateful for Heaven’s involvement. Obviously, my life was not meant to end when I was a toddler. God had more in store for me. Thankfully for my parents, I was returned to them safely.

Who knows what would have happened to me if no one had been sent to redirect and protect me at that helpless and innocent age. I don’t want to imagine the horrors that could have befallen me. I’d rather focus on the supernatural protection that showed up that day in 1965. Whenever that story flutters across my memory, I still thank God for his divine protection and for sparing the whole family much grief.

*****

Once we get to Heaven and God shows us a reel of our life, we will discover how many times we were rescued, protected or redirected by supernatural means. What a divine privilege it is that, during our time on earth, God gives us snapshots into the supernatural realm, unusual happenings that announce that Heaven is present and involved in our lives.

For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.

Psalm 91:11
